Sarah Mitton wins silver in women’s shot put at Diamond League event in China

Sarah Mitton of Liverpool, Nova Scotia has won the silver medal in the women’s shot put at a Wanda Diamond League event in Shanghai, China on Saturday. For Mitton, it was her seventh career Diamond League medal.

Mitton posted a throw of 19.86 metres. Chase Jackson of the United States won the gold medal with a throw of 20.03 metres. Jiayuan Song won the bronze medal with a throw of 19.83 metres. Mitton reached the podium by 0.25 metres. Lijiao Gong of China finished in fourth place with a throw of 19.61 metres.

This was the first time this year that Mitton earned a Diamond League medal. She placed fourth on April 20 in Xiamen, China, with a throw of 19.35 metres. Mitton’s greatest achievement this year was winning gold at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow with a throw of 20.22 metres.

Mitton has one gold medal, five silver medals and one bronze medal in her Diamond League career. She previously won gold in Oslo in 2023, silver in Stockholm in 2022, silver in Zurich in 2022, silver in Brussels in 2023, silver in Eugene in 2023, and bronze in Chorzow in 2022.

Mitton’s best throw of her career was 20.33 metres. The Canadian National record throw was set at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Langley, British Columbia on June 25, 2022. The silver medal for Mitton will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
