Sarah Mitton wins Diamond League women’s shot put bronze in Morocco

Sarah Mitton of Liverpool, Nova Scotia won the bronze medal in a Diamond League women’s shot put event in Rabat, Morocco on Sunday. For Mitton it was her eighth Diamond League medal as she has now won one gold medal, five silver medals and two bronze medals in her career.

Mitton had a throw of 19.36 metres. Chase Jackson of the United States won the gold medal with 20 metres and Yemisi Ogunleye of Germany won the silver medal with a throw of 19.4 metres. Mitton reached the podium by 0.82 metres. Danniel Thomas-Dodd of Jamaica finished in fourth place with a throw of 18.54 metres.

For Mitton it was her second Diamond League medal of the season. She won the silver medal in Shanghai, China on April 27.

In the Diamond League standings, Mitton is in second place with 18 points. Jackson leads with 22 points. This was the third Diamond League women’s shot put event this season. Gong Lijiao of China won gold in her home country, as she placed first in Xiamen on April 20, and then Jackson won in Shanghai.

Jackson has won the gold medal in the women’s shot put at the last two World Track and Field Championships, with Mitton winning silver last year. The bronze medal for Mitton will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
