Sarah Mitton resets Canadian record in the women’s shot put

Sarah Mitton of Liverpool, Nova Scotia has reset the Canadian record in the women’s shot put. According to CBC Sports on Saturday, Mitton posted a throw of 20.68 metres and beat her previous Canadian record throw of 20.33 metres. Mitton’s new Canadian record was set at the Throws U 2024 Series in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania.

In Fleetwood on Saturday, it was a 1-2 Canadian finish. Grace Tennant of Caistor Centre, Ontario won the silver medal with a throw of 17.15 metres. Rachel Fatherly of the United States won the bronze medal with a throw of 17.06 metres.

Mitton’s previous best Canadian record was set at the 2022 Bell Canadian Track and Field Championships in Langley, British Columbia. She had a throw of 20.33 metres on June 25. 2022.

At the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, Mitton set the Canadian record for the women’s indoor shot put. She posted a throw of 20.22 metres, and was the only Canadian to win a medal at the event.

Heading into the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Mitton is a strong medal contender in the women’s shot put. She also won the silver medal at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, and seven Diamond League medals. The Olympic women’s shot put final will take place on August 9 at 11:40 AM MT.
