Sarah Mitton and Andre de Grasse medal at Brussels Diamond League

Sarah Mitton of Liverpool, Nova Scotia won the silver medal and Canadian Olympic gold medalist Andre de Grasse of Scarborough, Ontario won the bronze medal at the Diamond League event in Brussels, Belgium over the last 48 hours. Mitton placed second in the women’s shot put on Thursday, and de Grasse, who won the gold medal in the men’s 200 metres at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, placed third in the men’s 200 metres on Friday.

In the women’s shot put, Mitton had a throw of 19.76 metres. Chase Ealey of the United States won the gold medal with 20.05 metres. Maggie Ewen of the United States won the bronze medal with a throw of 19.64 metres. Mitton reached the podium by 0.45 metres over Auriol Dongmo of Portugal, who had a throw of 19.31 metres.

In the men’s 200 metres, de Grasse had a season best time of 19.89 seconds. Kenneth Bednarek of the United States won the gold medal with a time of 19.79 seconds. Zharnel Hughes of Great Britain won the silver medal with a time of 19.82 seconds. de Grasse reached the podium by .09 seconds over Canadian Olympic silver medalist Aaron Brown of Toronto, Ontario, who finished in fourth place with a time of 19.98 seconds. Brown won the Olympic silver medal in the men’s 4×100 metre relay at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. The medals for de Grasse and Mitton will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
