Team Canada has improved to a record of 10 wins and zero losses at the 2024 Women’s World Curling Championship in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The Canadian team skipped by Rachel Homan of Ottawa, Ontario beat Estonia 9-4 and New Zealand 9-2.

It was a fantastic start for the Canadians against Estonia as they scored seven points in the first two ends, and took an 8-0 lead over Estonia after three ends. This was one of three games in Draw 15 that only went six ends, as Italy trounced Norway 10-2 and Switzerland clobbered New Zealand 10-2. The only close game during the draw had the United States over Japan 9-7.

The fact that three games went six ends in the same draw was interesting. I was told at the 2024 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Calgary that all pool games needed to be a minimum of eight ends to align with international play. Yet, there have now been seven games at the 2024 Women’s World Curling Championship which have gone six ends. One also needs to question the 13 team tournament, and if it should be reduced to 10 teams in order to make the games simply more competitive. Remember, less is more when it comes to the quality of games.

In the evening draw, Canada scored five points in the eighth end en route to a 9-2 win over New Zealand. Canada plays Scotland and South Korea on Friday.
