Pats eliminate Broncos from 2018 Mastercard Memorial Cup

In one of the most craziest and exciting Mastercard Memorial Cup games of quite some time, the Regina Pats defeated the Swift Current Broncos 6-5 at the Brandt Centre in Regina, Saskatchewan on Wednesday. With the win, the Pats advanced to the semifinal of the 2018 Memorial Cup and eliminated the Broncos from the tournament.

The Regina win also meant the Acadie-Bathurst Titan of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League clinched first place after the round robin and moved directly to Sunday’s final. Regina will now play the Ontario Hockey League champion Hamilton Bulldogs in Friday’s semifinal and that no tiebreaker will be played on Thursday as three teams are tied at 2-1 and Swift Current was all alone in last at 0-3.

In the Pats win, it was a remarkable game for Pats captain Sam Steel of Sherwood Park, Alberta, who had five assists. Right winger Nick Henry of Portage La Prairie, Manitoba notched a hat trick, while Cameron Hebig of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Josh Mahura of St. Albert, Alberta also had multi-point games. Hebig had one goal and one assist while Mahura had two assists. Bryce Platt of Regina, Saskatchewan and Libor Hajek also scored for the Pats in their one goal victory.
