Nova Scotia wins their first gold medal at 2023 Canada Winter Games

Nova Scotia won its first gold medal at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on Tuesday. The gold medal came in karate, the new sport this year at Canada’s most significant multi-sport national competition. Gassan Alkrudi of Halifax placed first in the men’s 61 kilogram Kumite division. In an all-Nova Scotia final, Alkrudi defeated Evan Peddle of Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia 1-0 in the gold medal match. The bronze medalists were Nia Haftlang of North Vancouver, British Columbia and Helitha Rathnayake of Calgary, Alberta.

Nova Scotia currently has five medals with Alkrudi being the only gold medalist and Peddle being the only silver medalist. The three bronze medals have come in female synchronized trampoline (Abigael Brownell of Truro and Amy Garrett of Dartmouth), male freestyle skiing big air (Malcolm Harris of Brookfield), and female 53 kilogram karate kumite (Mikayla German of Dartmouth).

British Columbia continues to lead the Canada Winter Games medal standings with 20. To date, BC has nine gold medals, three silver medals and eight bronze medals. On Tuesday, British Columbia won five gold medals. The gold medalists were Molly Caldwell of Golden (female 7.5 kilometre biathlon), Jordan Peet of Whistler (female freestyle big air), Olivia Brodie of Victoria (female 53 kilogram kumite karate), Ocean Ma of Richmond (female squash) and Jacob Lin of Tsawwassen (male squash).
