Nova Scotia upsets Alberta in female hockey at 2023 Canada Winter Games

The second week of the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island got under way on Monday with female hockey commencing. The most notable result came in Pool A as Nova Scotia upset Alberta 3-2 in extra time.

The Nova Scotia hero was Samantha Taylor of Halifax, who scored the shootout winner. Taylor plays for the Halifax Western Capitals in the Under-18 AAA league and the Nova Scotia Female Hockey League.

There were also two interesting blowouts on Monday as Ontario clobbered Manitoba 7-0 and British Columbia spanked Saskatchewan 11-1. In Ontario’s win, Hannah Clark of Oshawa made 15 saves for the shutout. It was a dominant performance for Ontario as they outshot Manitoba 52-15. Four Ontario players had a multi-point game as Emmalee Pais of Kenora scored twice, while Abby Lunney of Newmarket, Ashley Allard of Ottawa, and Caitlin Kraemer of Kitchener had one goal and one assist each.

In British Columbia’s 10 goal win over Saskatchewan, defenseman Chloe Primerano of North Vancouver led British Columbia in scoring with six points (two goals and four assists). Primerano made hockey history this past year as she was the first female skater selected in the WHL Draft. She was taken by the Vancouver Giants. Jordan Baxter of New Westminster, British Columbia meanwhile had a huge offensive game with three goals and two assists for five points. In the only other game, Quebec beat New Brunswick 5-1.
