Mohammed Ahmed wins gold in men’s 1500 metres at Bowerman Intrasquad Meet

Mohammed Ahmed of St. Catharines, Ontario won the gold medal on Tuesday in the men’s 1500 metres at the 2020 Bowerman Track Club Intrasquad Meet in Portland, Oregon according to the Canadian Press. Ahmed posted a winning time of 3:34.89. He becomes the fifth fastest Canadian of all-time in the men’s 1500 metres.

Marc Scott of Great Britain won the silver medal with a time of 3:35.93. Calgary-born Grant Fisher of the United States won the bronze medal with a time of 3:36.23. Ahmed reached the podium by 1.42 seconds as Evan Jager of the United States finished in fourth place with a time of 3:36.31.

Kevin Sullivan of Brantford, Ontario holds the Canadian record in the men’s 1500 metres. He posted a time of 3:31.71 at the Golden Gala in Rome, Italy on June 30, 2000. The other Canadian runners who have posted faster times over the years than Ahmed are Graham Hood of Winnipeg, Manitoba (3:33.94 at the 1997 Zurich Grand Prix), Nate Brannen of Cambridge, Ontario (3:34.22 at the 2012 FBK Games in Hengelo, Netherlands), and Charles Philibert-Thiboutot of Quebec City, Quebec (3:34.23 at the 2015 Monaco Diamond League).

This was the second victory for Ahmed in July in Portland. On July 10, he broke his own Canadian record in the men’s 5000 metres, as he posted a winning time of 12:47.20 at the Portland Intrasquad Meet II.
