Mark Scheifele records eighth career NHL hat trick

Mark Scheifele of Kitchener, Ontario notched his eighth career National Hockey League hat trick on Tuesday. He accomplished the feat in a 4-2 Winnipeg Jets win over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Scheifele opened the scoring at 4:04 of the second period from Alex Iafallo and Nate Schmidt. He then put the Jets up 3-1 with an unassisted marker with two minutes and five seconds left in the third period. Scheifele then scored with nine seconds left in the third period into an empty net from Josh Morrissey of Calgary, Alberta and Sean Monahan of Brampton, Ontario on an all-Canadian goal.

In 61 games this season, Scheifele had 22 goals and 40 assists for 62 points. He is a +24 with 34 penalty minutes, 16 power-play points, four game-winning goals, 134 shots on goal, 519 faceoff wins, 34 takeaways, 56 hits, 39 takeaways, and 21 giveaways.

All eight of Scheifele’s hat tricks have been with the Jets. He also has scored thrice in a 4-2 Jets win over the Montreal Canadiens on March 5, 2016, in a 5-2 Jets win over the Dallas Stars on November 2, 2017, in a 5-1 Jets win over the Ottawa Senators on February 20, 2020, in an 8-4 Jets win over the New Jersey Devils on December 3, 2021, in a 6-3 Jets win over the Minnesota Wild on February 16, 2022, in a 6-5 Jets loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on December 13, 2022, and in a 4-2 Jets win over the Vancouver Canucks on December 29, 2022.

With the win, the Jets improved to a record of 44 wins, 19 regulation losses, and five losses in extra time for 93 points. They are tied for first place in the Central Division with the Colorado Avalanche.
