
Marielle Thompson of North Vancouver, British Columbia has won her second career Olympic medal. Following a gold medal at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Thompson won an Olympic silver medal on Thursday at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing in the women’s ski cross.
In the women’s ski cross event, Thompson won the third elimination heat, and the quarterfinal, before finishing second in the semifinal and second in the big final. Sandra Naeslund of Sweden won gold and Daniela Maier of Germany won bronze. Maier’s bronze was controversial as she reached the podium due to a disqualification from Fanny Smith of Switzerland.
There were four Canadians in the top seven. Brittany Phelan of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec finished was in fifth place, Courtney Hoffos of Invermere, British Columbia was in sixth place, and Hannah Schmidt of Ottawa, Ontario was in seventh place.
The men’s ski cross event will be on Friday. Kevin Drury of Toronto, Ontario won the bronze medal at the 2019 World Snowboarding Championships in Park City, Utah, Reece Howden of Chilliwack, British Columbia was the 2021 World Cup men’s ski cross champion, Brady Leman of Calgary, Alberta is the reigning Olympic champion from the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, and Jared Schmidt of Ottawa, Ontario won bronze at a World Cup in Arosa, Switzerland in December.
With the medals in women’s hockey and ski cross on Thursday, Canada now has 20 medals and in fifth place. They are behind Norway (28 medals), the Russian Olympic Committee (24 medals), Germany and the United States (21 medals each).
