The Toronto Maple Leafs are naming John Chayka of Jordan Station, Ontario as their new general manager according to Elliotte Friedman of Rogers Sportsnet. Chayka is replacing Brad Treliving of Penticton, British Columbia, who was fired from his job on March 30.

This is the second time Chayka has been a National Hockey League general manager. He was previously the general manager of the Arizona Coyotes from 2016 to 2020.

Chayka is reportedly not the only notable hiring by the Maple Leafs organization. The Maple Leafs former captain, Mats Sundin, is the new Maple Leafs Senior Executive Advisor of Hockey Operations. Sundin spent 13 seasons with the Maple Leafs from 1994 to 2008.

The Maple Leafs are coming off a disappointing 2025-26 NHL regular season. They were dead last in the Atlantic Division with a record of 32 wins, 36 regulation losses and 14 losses in extra time for 78 points. The Maple Leafs were also the second worst team in the Eastern Conference. The only team worse were the New York Rangers, who finished with 77 points.

Treliving’s era in Toronto will be best remembered for being unable to re-sign Mitch Marner of Markham, Ontario long term. Marner ended up being traded to the Vegas Golden Knights in a sign-and-trade deal on June 30, 2025.
