Mackenzie Hughes of Hamilton, Ontario leads the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi. After 36 holes, Hughes is at -10 and is tied with Thomas Detry of Belgium.
Hughes had a spectacular round of nine-under-par on Friday. He had nine birdies and zero bogeys. Hughes birdied the first, second, third, fifth, ninth, 12th, 15th, 17th, and 18th holes. In the first round on Thursday, Hughes was only one-under-par. He birdied the third and 13th holes, and bogeyed the fourth hole.
There are seven more golfers in contention. Sepp Straka of Austria is alone in third place at -9. Garrick Higgo of South Africa is in a three-way tie for fourth place at -8. Higgo is tied with Americans Mark Hubbard and Scott Stallings. Meanwhile, there is a three-way tie for seventh place at -7. There you can find Germany’s Stephan Jager, along with Americans Nick Hardy and Davis Riley.
Hughes has won one PGA Tour event in the past. That came at the 2016 RSM Classic in Saint Simons Island, Georgia. Hughes shot a four round score of -17, and won a dramatic five-man playoff on the third extra hole. The other four golfers who were in that playoff and lost to Hughes were Americans Blayne Barber and Billy Horschel, Sweden’s Henrik Norlander and Chile’s Camilo Villegas.
