Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal, Quebec has reached the final eight at the 2022 French Open. On Sunday in the fourth round, Fernandez, the 17th seed, defeated Amanda Anisimova of the United States, the 27th seed, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Fernandez got off to a fantastic start as she won the first four games of the match and broke Anisimova twice. Anisimova played much better in the second half of the first set, as she was able to break Fernandez twice, but still lost the set by three points. Anisimova was the better player in the second set as she had 18 winners, compared to only eight for Fernandez.
Then in the third set, Fernandez took control of the match. She capitalized on a key unforced error by Anisimova in the fifth game of the set as Fernandez went up 3-2. Then in the ninth game of the deciding set, Fernandez broke Anisimova again to win the match.
This was the second time in Fernandez’s career she beat Anisimova. At Indian Wells earlier this year, Anisimova withdrew after the second set in their second round match when she was not feeling well. Fernandez and Anisimova were tied at one set apiece at the time.
Fernandez will next play Martina Trevisan of Italy in the women’s quarterfinals on Tuesday. This will be their first career meeting.
