Laurie Blouin wins World Cup women’s slopestyle snowboarding gold in Calgary

Canadian Olympic silver medalist Laurie Blouin of Stoneham-et-Tewkesbury, Quebec won the gold medal in a women’s slopestyle snowboarding World Cup in Calgary, Alberta on Sunday. It was one of two medals won by Canadian snowboarders on Sunday as Liam Brearley of Gravenhurst, Ontario won the silver medal in the men’s slopestyle snowboarding World Cup.

Blouin, who won the silver medal in the women’s slopestyle snowboarding at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, posted a winning score of 79.56 points. Silje Norendal of Norway won the silver medal with 75.68 points. Katie Omerod of Great Britain won the bronze medal with 68.71 points. Blondin earned a medal by 12.68 points over Lucile Lefevre of France, who was in fourth place with a score of 66.88 points.

This as Blouin’s first career World Cup victory. She previous won seven World Cup medals, but none of them were gold. With the win, Blouin moved into second place in the World Cup snowboarding standings with 2200 points. Omerod leads with 2600 points.

Brearley had 76.58 points in the men’s slopestyle snowboarding World Cup. Tiarn Collins of New Zealand won the gold medal with a score of 80.5 points. Ruki Tobita of Japan won the silver medal with 79.53 points. Brearley reached the podium by 0.38 points over fourth place finisher Stian Kleivdal of Norway, who was in fourth place with 76.2 points.

This was Brearley’s first career World Cup medal. He now has 720 World Cup points and is in 18th place in the World Cup men’s slopestyle snowboarding standings. Tobita leads with 1616.4 points. The medals for Blouin and Brearley will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
