Seattle Kraken goaltender Martin Jones of North Vancouver, British Columbia has been named the National Hockey League first star of the week for the week from January 9-15, 2023. Jones posted a record of three wins and zero losses, with a goals against average of 1.67 and a save percentage of .933.

Jones’s two shutouts came in a 4-0 Seattle win over the Montreal Canadiens on January 9, and in a 3-0 Seattle win over the Boston Bruins on January 12. He made 21 saves against the Canadiens and 27 saves against the Bruins. Jones was honoured even though he gave up five goals in a single game on Saturday, in an 8-5 Kraken win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Jones became the first Kraken player in franchise history to be named the NHL First Star of the Week. He was honoured back in November as the third star of the week, the same week when two-time Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins was honoured. Crosby, a native of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia won the gold medal in men’s hockey at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

In 2022-23, Jones has a record of 21 wins, five regulation losses, and three losses in extra time. He has a goals against average of 2.76 and a save percentage of .895.

The Kraken are in second place in the Pacific Division with a record of 26 wins, 13 regulation losses and four losses in extra time. They are two points back of the first place Vegas Golden Knights.
