Jordan Pierre-Gilles wins three races at World Cup short track event in Beijing

Canadian Olympic gold medalist Jordan Pierre-Gilles of Sherbrooke, Quebec won three gold medals over the weekend at a World Cup short track speed skating event in Beijing, China. Pierre-Gilles won a gold medal in a men’s 500 metre race on Saturday and Sunday, and was part of the Canadian team on Sunday that won gold in the men’s 5000 metre relay. Pierre-Gilles won the gold medal at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing in the men’s 5000 metre relay.

On Saturday in the men’s 500 metres, Pierre-Gilles had a time of 40.711 seconds. Quentin Fercoq of France won the silver medal with a time of 40.875 seconds. Jens van ‘T Wout of the Netherlands won the bronze medal with a time of 41.28 seconds. Pierre-Gilles reached the podium by 1.11 seconds over Shaoang Li of China, who had a fourth place time of 41.601 seconds.

On Sunday, in the men’s 500 metres, Pierre-Gilles had a winning time of 40.666 seconds. Canadian Olympic gold medalist Steven Dubois of Laval, Quebec won the silver medal with a time of 40.695 seconds. Long Sun of China won the bronze medal with a time of 40.724 seconds. Pierre-Gilles reached the podium by .208 seconds over Stijn Desmet of Belgium. Dubois reached the podium by 0.179 seconds over Desmet. Desmet’s fourth place time was 40.874 seconds. Dubois was part of the Canadian team that won Olympic gold in the men’s 5000 metre relay at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing. The complete World Cup short track speed skating standings in the men’s 500 metres have not been made available on the International Skating Union website.

In the men’s 5000 metre relay on Sunday, Pierre-Gilles and Dubois teamed up with Canadian Olympic gold medalist Pascal Dion of Montreal, Quebec and Dandjinou to win gold. Canada had a winning time of 6:55.964. South Korea won the silver medal with a time of 6:56.717. China won the bronze medal with a time of 6:58.280. Canada reached the podium by 3.042 seconds over the Netherlands, which had a fourth place time of 6:59.006. In the World Cup standings, Canada leads with 280 points. China is second with 230 points. Like Dubois and Pierre-Gilles, Dion won a gold medal for Canada in the men’s 5000 metre relay at the 2018 Olympic Games in Beijing.

In the men’s 1500 metres, Dandjinou won an individual medal as he placed third in the men’s 1500 metres. He had a time of 2:19.179. Gun Woo Kim of South Korea won the gold medal with a time of 2:18.934. Wenlong Li of China won the silver medal with a time of 2:19.009. Dandjinou reached the podium by .131 seconds over Reinis Berzins of Latvia, who had a fourth place time of 2:19.310. The medals for Dubois, Pierre-Gilles, Dandjinou and Dion will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
