Alex Harvey of Saint-Ferreol-les-Neiges, Quebec is heading into the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang with momentum. On Sunday, Harvey won a silver medal in a men’s 15km cross-country skiing mass start freestyle event in Seefeld, Austria.

Harvey posted a time of 31 minutes, 39.3 seconds. Dario Cologna of Switzerland won the gold medal with a time of 31 minutes, 37.9 seconds, Martin Johnsrud Sundby of Norway won the bronze medal with a time of 31 minutes, 40.8 seconds.

Harvey earned a podium spot by 4.5 seconds. Didrik Toenseth of Norway finished in fourth place with a time of 31 minutes, 43.8 seconds.

Even though Harvey earned a silver medal in the men’s 15km cross country skiing mass start freestyle event, it should be noted that specific competition will not take place at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. The Olympic men’s mass start is 50km and the skiers will use a classical technique for that event. There is a men’s 15km cross country skiing freestyle event at the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, but the mass start format is not used.

Harvey is trying to become the first Canadian man to earn an Olympic medal in cross-country skiing. The men’s 30km skiathlon takes place February 10 (11:15 pm MT), the men’s individual sprint classical event takes place February 13 (1:30 am MT), the men’s 15km freestyle event takes place February 15 (11 pm MT), and the men’s 50km mass start classical takes place February 23 (10pm MT).
