According to the Associated Press on Thursday, former Washington Capitals right winger Stephen Peat of Princeton, British Columbia has passed away at the age of 44. Peat was seen crossing the street at 4:15 a.m. on August 30 in Langley, British Columbia when he was hit by a car. Peat died from injuries sustained from the accident.
Peat played 130 games in the National Hockey League with the Capitals from 2001 to 2005. In four seasons and 130 NHL regular season games, Peat had eight goals and two assists for 10 points. He was a -16 with 234 penalty minutes, and 41 shots on goal.
Peat played the majority of his junior hockey career in Canada. He was with the Langley Thunder of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League from 1994 to 1996, and then spent five seasons in the Western Hockey League from 1995 to 2000. In that time, he was with the Red Deer Rebels and Calgary Hitmen.
Known as an enforcer, Peat had 161 penalty minutes with the Rebels in 1996-97, 189 penalty minutes in 1997-98, and 100 penalty minutes with the Hitmen in 1999-2000. Peat was drafted in the second round, 32nd overall by the Anaheim Ducks in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. However, he never played for the Ducks. Peat was traded to Washington for a fourth round pick in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
