Elizabeth Hosking of Longueuil, Quebec won the silver medal on Friday in women’s halfpipe snowboarding at the 2023 World Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding Championships in Bakuriani, Georgia. For Canada, it was their sixth medal of the championships, placing only behind Austria at 11 medals and Switzerland at nine medals.
Hosking posted a score of 85.5 points. Xuetong Cai of China won the gold medal with a score of 90.5 points. Mitsuki Ono of Japan won the bronze medal with 83 points. Hosking reached the podium by 4.75 points. Ruki Tomita of Japan was in fourth place with 80.75 points.
In the women’s halfpipe snowboarding event, all athletes get three runs with the best run of the three counting towards the score. Hosking’s best run was her first run.
This was the most notable result of Hosking’s snowboarding career. Prior to her World Championship silver medal, she has won two World Cup silver medals. The first came in Copper Mountain, Colorado on December 16, 2022, and the second medal came in Calgary, Alberta on February 10, 2023.
Hosking was Canada’s youngest Olympian at 16 years of age at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. Her world championship silver medal in Georgia will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
