The Edmonton Oil Kings join the Saint John Sea Dogs and Shawinigan Cataractes as Memorial Cup bound. On Monday in game six of the 2022 Western Hockey League Championship, the Oil Kings defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 2-0 to win the best out of seven WHL final four games to two.
As a result, Edmonton won the 2022 Ed Chynoweth Cup, presented to the WHL champion. This was the fifth time that the Oil Kings were WHL champions as they previously won in 1971, 1972, 2012 and 2014.
In game six of the WHL Final, Sebastian Cossa of Fort McMurray, Alberta made 27 saves in posting the shutout. The Oil Kings goal scorers were defenseman Kaiden Guhle of Edmonton, Alberta and center Jakub Demek. Meanwhile, Jake Neighbours of Airdrie, Alberta led the Oil Kings in scoring with two points, as he had two assists.
In the 2022 WHL Playoffs. the Oil Kings won 16 of 19 playoff games. They swept the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-0 in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal, swept the Red Deer Rebels 4-0 in the Eastern Conference Semifinal, and then beat the Winnipeg Ice 4-1 to win the Eastern Conference Final.
There is one more spot up for grabs to determine the representatives in the 2022 Memorial Cup in Saint John, New Brunswick. A seventh game is required to determine the champion in the Ontario Hockey League Final. The Hamilton Bulldogs will play the Windsor Spitfires on Wednesday in Hamilton.
