Cynthia Appiah of North York, Ontario won the World Cup women’s monobob bronze medal in Lake Placid, New York on Friday. For Appiah, it was her ninth career World Cup medal, as six medals have come in women’s monobob, and three medals have come in two-women bobsleigh.

Appiah posted a third place finish of 1:59.13. Bree Walker of Australia won the gold medal with a time of 1:58.67. Elana Meyers Taylor of the United States won the silver medal with a time of 1:58.91. Appiah reached the podium by three one hundredths of a second over Laura Nolte of Germany, who had a fourth place time of 1:59.16.

In the World Cup women’s monobob standings for 2023-24, Appiah finished in eighth place with 1200 points. Lisa Buckwitz of Germany was the Crystal Globe champion in the women’s monobob with 1644 points.

This was the first medal for Appiah this season. Appiah’s greatest accomplishment in bobsled was winning a two-woman World Cup bobsled race alongside Kaillie Humphries. However, it should be noted that Appiah was a brakewoman at the time, and now she is finding success as an accomplished Canadian driver. The bronze medal in Lake Placid will give Appiah confidence as she prepares for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
