Edmonton Oilers centre Connor McDavid of Richmond Hill, Ontario made National Hockey League history on Wednesday. In a 4-0 Oilers win over the Calgary Flames at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, McDavid recorded two assists.
McDavid now has an assist in the Oilers’s first 13 games of the season. That is a NHL record.
The previous record was 12, which was set by three players. They were Edmonton Oilers centre Wayne Gretzky of Brantford, Ontario (1982-83), Boston Bruins centre Ken Linseman of Kingston, Ontario (1985-86) and Carolina Hurricanes centre Sebastian Aho (2018-19).
McDavid’s first assist came at 7:46 of the first period. He set up Mathieu Joseph of Laval, Quebec, who scored the game-winning goal to put the Oilers up 1-0 at the time. Joseph’s goal was an all-Canadian goal as Evan Bouchard of Oakville, Ontario had the other assist.
McDavid now has 28 assists to start the season. That leads the NHL. Matthew Tkachuk of the Florida Panthers and defenseman Adam Fox of the New York Rangers are second on the list with 16 assists each.
Of McDavid’s 28 assists this season, 13 have been on the power-play and 15 have been while the Oilers have been on even strength.
The Oilers now go on an eastern road trip. They start on Saturday afternoon against the New York Islanders.
