Connor McDavid records ninth career NHL hat trick

Connor McDavid of Richmond Hill, Ontario recorded his third hat trick of the 2020-21 National Hockey League season on Monday, and the ninth of his career. McDavid scored thrice in a 6-1 Oilers win over the Winnipeg Jets at the Bell Manitoba Telecommunication Services Place in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

McDavid put the Oilers up 2-0 at 18:31 of the first period from Tyson Barrie of Victoria, British Columbia. Then in the second period, McDavid scored twice. He put the Oilers up 3-0 on a goal from Dominik Kahun and Jesse Puljujarvi at 3:35 of the second period, and then 6-1 with a remarkable, unassisted breakaway goal that easily beat Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, at 16:30 of the second period.

McDavid finished the game with four points, as he had an assist on a goal by Darnell Nurse of Hamilton, Ontario. Leon Draisaitl and Puljujarvi also had multi-point games. Draisaitl had one goal and one assist for two points, and Puljujarvi had two assists. The other Oilers’ goal scorer was Alex Chiasson of Montreal, Quebec.

McDavid’s two prior hat tricks this season came on January 14 in a 5-2 Oilers win over the Vancouver Canucks and on February 20 in a 7-1 Oilers win over the Calgary Flames. The only other player with three hat tricks this season is Mika Zibanejad of the New York Rangers.
