The Concordia University Stingers have won the 2024 USport Women’s Hockey Championship from Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. On Sunday, the Stingers defeated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 3-1 in the championship final.
Rosalie Begin-Cyr of St-Georges-de-Beauce, Quebec led the Stingers with two points. She had one goal and one assist. The other two Stingers goal scorers were Emilie Lussier of Ste-Martine, Quebec and Jessymaude Drapeau of Riviere-du-Loup, Quebec.
The gold medal game was a complete performance by the Stingers. The only goal the Varsity Blues scored came with 47 seconds left in the third period, with the game out of reach.
The Stingers were the number one seed in the tournament. They defeated the host team, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 4-0 in the quarterfinals, and then the University of Waterloo Warriors 3-1 in the semifinals.
The Varsity Blues meanwhile were tested more leading up to the final than the Stingers. That is because they defeated the University of New Brunswick Reds in the quarterfinals and the University of Montreal Carabins in the semifinals by identical 2-1 scores. The Varsity Blues’s win over the Carabins came in a shootout.
This is the fourth Canadian University Women’s Hockey Championship for the Stingers. They previously won in 1998, 1999 and 2022.
