Christine de Bruin of Edmonton, Alberta has won Canada’s 15th medal at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. On Sunday evening in Canada (Monday in Beijing), de Bruin posted a time of 4:21.03 to claim third in the women’s monobob. The event was making its debut at the Olympic Winter Games.

Calgary-born Kaillie Humphries off the United States won the gold medal with a time of 4:19.27. Elana Meyers Taylor of the United States won the silver medal with a time of 4:20.81. De Bruin reached the podium by three tenths of a second over Laura Nolte of Germany. Nolte had a fourth place time of 4:21.33.

De Bruin does not have the experience in monobob, as she does in the two-woman bobsled, however she did reach the podium twice in the Women’s Monobob World Series in 2021-22. She finished first in Altenberg, Germany on December 18, and again in Sigulda. Latvia, on January 1.

Now the focus for De Bruin will be in the two-woman Olympic event with her brakewoman Kristen Bujnowski of London, Ontario (starts on February 18 at 5 a.m. MT). De Bruin and Bujnowski have won the bronze medal together in the two-woman bobsled competition at the 2019 World Bobsled Championship in Whistler, British Columbia, and the 2020 World Bobsled Championship in Altenberg.

Canada is now tied for third in the medal standings with the United States. They each have 15 medals. Canada is at one gold medal, four silver medals and 10 bronze medals. Norway leads with 21 medals and the Russian Olympic Committee is second with 18 medals.
