History was made in the Western Hockey League on Thursday. Chloe Primerano of North Vancouver, British Columbia became the first female hockey player ever to be drafted in the Western Hockey League Bantam Draft according to Rogers Sportsnet. Primerano was selected by the Vancouver Giants in the 13th round, 286th overall.

Primerano, a defenseman, played this past year with the Burnaby Winter Club U15 Prep Team. She had two goals and 17 assists for 19 points in 30 games.

This was the second straight year a female hockey player was selected in a Canadian Hockey League Draft. Last year, goaltender Taya Currie of Parkhill, Ontario was selected in the 14th round, 267th overall, by the Sarnia Sting. Currie became the first player ever selected in the Ontario Hockey League Draft.

It should be noted that left winger Gavin McKenna of Whitehorse, Yukon was drafted first overall by the Medicine Hat Tigers. McKenna played this past year with the Kelowna U18 Prep squad.

Three Canadian teams are left in the 2022 Western Hockey League Playoffs. In the Eastern Conference Final, the Edmonton Oil Kings are playing the Winnipeg Ice. In the Western Conference Final, the Kamloops Blazers are playing the Seattle Thunderbirds. The conference finals begin on Friday.
