Cassie Sharpe and Rachael Karker each win Olympic medals in women’s halfpipe skiing in Beijing

Cassie Sharpe of Calgary, Alberta and Rachael Karker of Erin, Ontario each landed on the Olympic podium on Thursday (Friday in China) at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing in the women’s halfpipe skiing competition.  Sharpe posted a score of 90.75 points and Karker had a score of 87.75 points. Sharpe reached the podium by 3.75 points and Karker reached the podium by 0.75 points over fourth place finisher Kelly Sildaru of Estonia, who had 87 points. Eileen Gu of China won the gold medal with 95.25 points. This is the second Olympic medal for Sharpe as she previously won gold in the women’s halfpipe at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. 

This is the 18th time in the history of the Olympic Winter Games that Canada has won multiple medals in the same Olympic event. At the 1932 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, Alexander Hurd of Montreal, Quebec won the silver medal and William Logan of St. John, New Brunswick won the bronze medal in the men’s 1500 metre speed skating. At the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Philippe Laroche of Lac Beauport, Quebec won the silver medal and Lloyd Langlois of Sherbrooke, Quebec win the bronze medal in men’s aerials. At the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Catriona Le May Doan of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan won the gold medal and Susan Auch of Winnipeg, Manitoba won the silver medal in the women’s 500 metre speed skating.

At the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Marc Gagnon of Chicoutimi, Quebec won the gold medal and Jonathan Guilmette of Montreal, Quebec won the silver medal in the men’s 500 metre short track speed skating. At the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Veronica Brenner of Scarborough, Ontario won the silver medal and Diedra Dionne of North Battleford, Saskatchewan won the bronze medal in the women’s aerials. At the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Duff Gibson of Vaughan, Ontario won the gold medal and Jeff Pain of Calgary, Alberta won the silver medal in men’s skeleton.

At the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Cindy Klassen of Winnipeg, Manitoba won the gold medal and Kristina Groves of Ottawa, Ontario won the silver medal in the women’s 1500 metre speed skating. At the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Clara Hughes of Winnipeg, Manitoba won the gold medal and Cindy Klassen of Winnipeg, Manitoba won the bronze medal in the women’s 5000 metre speed skating.

At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. Kaillie Humphries of Calgary and Heather Moyse of Summerside, Prince Edward island won the gold medal, while Helen Upperton of Calgary, Alberta and Shelley-Ann Brown of Scarborough, Ontario won the silver medal in the two-woman bobsled. At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Charles Hamelin of Levis, Quebec won the gold medal and Francois-Louis Tremblay of Alma, Quebec won the bronze medal in the men’s 500 metre short track speed skating.

At the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, sisters Justine Dufour-Lapointe and Chloe Dufour-Lapointe of Montreal, Quebec won gold and silver in women’s moguls. At the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Alexandre Bilodeau of Montreal, Quebec won gold and Mikael Kingsbury of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec won silver in men’s moguls. At the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Marielle Thompson of North Vancouver, British Columbia won gold and Kelsey Serwa of Kelowna, British Columbia won bronze in women’s ski cross.

At the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, Maxence Parrot of Cowansville, Quebec won silver abd Mark McMorris of Regina, Saskatchewan won bronze in men’s slopestyle snowboarding. At the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, Serwa won gold and Brittany Phelan of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec won silver in the women’s ski cross. At the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, Parrot won gold and McMorris won bronze in men’s slopestyle snowboarding.
