Carleton University and Ryerson University win Canadian University Basketball Championships

The Carleton University Ravens and the Ryerson University Rams are the Canadian University Basketball champions for 2022. In the men’s final on Sunday from Edmonton, Alberta, the Ravens defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 83-72. In the women’s final on Sunday from Kingston, Ontario, the Rams defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 70-48.

In the men’s final, the Ravens were led in scoring by guard Aiden Warnholtz of Ottawa, Ontario, who had 18 points. Three other Ravens reached double digits in scoring. Lloyd Pandi of Ottawa had 16 points, Alain Louis of Montreal, Quebec had 15 points, and Nelson Cilien of Montreal, Quebec had 11 points coming off the bench. Pandi meanwhile had a double double, as he had 13 rebounds.

In Edmonton this weekend, the Ravens also beat the University of Victoria Vikes 94-77 in the quarterfinals, and the University of Alberta Golden Bears 64-63 in the semifinals. This was Carleton’s 16th national men’s basketball championship, with all titles coming since 2003.

In the women’s final, the Rams were led in scoring by Rachel Farwell of Rothesay, New Brunswick, who had 17 points. Mikaela Dodig of Bolton, Ontario had 13 points, while Eve Uwayesu of Ottawa, Ontario, and Jama Bin-Edward of Waterloo, Ontario, had 12 points each. Meanwhile, Eleanor Jones led the Rams with 12 rebounds. Unlike Carleton, which has 16 national championships for the men, this was the first national championship in women’s basketball for Ryerson.

In other university women’s basketball news, a Canadian was part of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks squad that won the National Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Championship on Sunday. Laeticia Amihere of Mississauga, Ontario scored two points in a 64-49 win over the University of Connecticut Huskies in the championship game.
