Canada wins six medals at short track speed skating World Cup in Montreal

Canada has won six medals at the 2022 Short Track Speed Skating World Cup in Montreal, Quebec, the opening World Cup short track speed skating event of the 2022-23 season. Of the six medals Canada won, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Steven Dubois of Laval, Quebec won three medals. He won the gold medal in the men’s 500 metres on Sunday, the silver medal in the men’s 1500 metres on Saturday, and was part of the team that won the bronze medal in the men’s 5000 metre relay on Sunday. Dubois won his Olympic gold medal in the men’s 5000 metre relay at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.

In the men’s 500 metres, Dubois had a winning time of 40.345 seconds. June Seo Lee of South Korea won the silver medal with a time of 40.434 seconds. Pietro Sighel of Italy won the bronze medal with a time of 40.719 seconds. Dubois reached the podium by 0.575 seconds over Canadian Jordan Pierre-Gillies of Sherbrooke, Quebec, who had a fourth place time of 40.92 seconds.

In the men’s 1500 metres, Dubois had a second place time of 2:14.312. Ji Won Park of South Korea won the gold medal with a time of 2:14.152. Kyung Hwan Hong of South Korea won the bronze medal with a time of 2:14.313. Dubois reached the podium by 0.857 seconds faster than Friso Emons of the Netherlands, who had a fourth place time of 2:15.169.

In the men’s 5000 metre relay, Dubois teamed up with Pierre-Gillies, Pascal Dion of Montreal, Quebec, and Maxime Laoun. Pierre-Gillies, Dion and Laoun also won a gold medal for Canada in the men’s 5000 metre relay at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. On Sunday, the Canadians posted a third place time of 7:12.997. South Korea won the gold medal with a time of 7:01.85. Kazakhstan won the silver medal with a time of 7:07.972.

Dion meanwhile also won the gold medal in the men’s 1000 metres on Sunday. He posted a winning time of 1:23.53. Hong won the silver medal with a time of 1:23.598. Tae Sung Kim of South Korea won the bronze medal with a time of 1:24.561.

Canada’s other two medals came in relay events. In the mixed 2000 metre relay event on Saturday, Rikki Doak of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Mathieu Pelletier of Laval, Quebec, Felix Roussel of Sherbrooke, Quebec, and Courtney Sarault of Moncton, New Brunswick had a third place time of 2:41.066. They reached the podium by .111 seconds over Japan, who had a fourth place time of 2:41.177. South Korea won the gold medal with a time of 2:39.586. Belgium won the silver medal with a time of 2:41.025.

In the women’s 3000 metre relay event on Sunday, Doak, Canadian Olympic silver medalist Kim Boutin of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Danae Blais of Chateauguay, Quebec, and Renee Marie Steenge of Montreal, Quebec won the silver medal with a time of 4:09.493. The Netherlands won the gold medal with a time of 4:09.217. Italy won the bronze medal with a time of 4:09.623. Canada reached the podium by .449 seconds over the United States, which had a fourth place time of 4:09.942.

Boutin won her silver medal in the women’s 1000 metres at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. The medals for Boutin, Blais, Steenge, Doak, Pelletier, Roussel, Sarault, Dion, Dubois, Pierre-Gillies and Laoun in Montreal this weekend will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
