Canada wins four World Cup medals in ski cross in Sweden

Team Canada won four medals in ski cross at World Cup competitions in Idre Fjall, Sweden this past weekend. Canadian Olympic gold medalist Brady Leman of Calgary, Alberta won a silver medal in a men’s ski cross World Cup on Saturday. Canadian Olympic silver medalist Brittany Phelan of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec won a bronze medal in a women’s ski cross World Cup on Saturday. Kevin Drury of Toronto, Ontario won a silver medal in a men’s ski cross World Cup on Sunday. Canadian Olympic gold medalist Marielle Thompson of Vancouver, British Columbia won a bronze medal in a women’s ski cross World Cup on Sunday.

Thompson won her Olympic gold medal at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Phelan and Leman each won their Olympic medals at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang.

In the men’s ski cross World Cup on Saturday, Leman won the sixth of eight elimination heats, finished second to Drury in the the third quarterfinal and won the second semifinal. He placed behind gold medalist Ryan Regez of Switzerland and ahead of bronze medalist Francois Place of France.

In the women’s ski cross World Cup on Saturday, Phelan won the second quarterfinal. She then finished second to Sandra Naeslund of Sweden in the first semifinal and then won the bronze medal behind gold medalist Fanny Smith of Switzerland and silver medalist, Naeslund.

In the men’s ski cross on Sunday, Drury won the first elimination heat, third quarterfinal and second semifinal. He then placed behind gold medalist Daniel Bohnacker of Germany in the big final and ahead of bronze medalist Ryan Regez of Switzerland.

In the women’s ski cross on Sunday, Thompson won the fourth quarterfinal and finished second behind Phelan in the second semifinal. In the big final, Thompson placed behind gold medalist Naeslund and silver medalist Smith.

In the men’s World Cup ski cross standings, Drury leads with 588 points. Regez is second with 439 points and Leman is third with 352 points.

In the women’s World Cup standings, Thompson is in third with 559 points and Phelan is fourth with 420 points. Naeslund leads with 730 points. The medals for Thompson, Phelan, Drury and Leman will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
