Canada wins bronze in women’s eights at 2022 World Rowing Championships

Team Canada won the bronze medal in the women’s eights at the 2022 World Rowing Championships in Racice, Czech Republic on Sunday. The Canadian team comprised of Jessica Sevick of Vancouver, British Columbia, Gabrielle Smith of Toronto, Ontario, Morgan Rosts of Jordan, Ontario, Kristen Edwards and Sydney Payne of Victoria, British Columbia, Alexis Cronk of London, Ontario, Kasia Gruchalla-Wesierski of Montreal, Quebec, Avalon Wasteneys of Toronto, Ontario, and coxswain Kristen Kit of St. Catharines, Ontario. Gruchalla-Wesierski, Wasteneys, Payne and Kit won a gold medal for Canada at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.

Romania won the gold medal with a time of 6:01.14. The Netherlands won the silver medal with a time of 6:05.04. The Canadian time was 6:07.51. Canada reached the podium by 2.29 seconds over the United States, who had a fourth place time of 6:09.80.

This was Canada’s only medal at the 2022 World Rowing Championships in Racice. The medal for Sevick, Smith, Ross, Edwards, Payne, Cronk, Gruchalla-Wesierski, Wasteneys and Kit will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

One interesting note from the 2022 World Rowing Championships in Racice, is the fact that the Canadian men’s eights rowing team had female coxswain Laura Court in the boat. Despite winning the second heat, Canada finished in fifth place.
