Canada trounces Fiji at Women’s U20 World Cup in Colombia

Team Canada has recorded its first victory of the 2024 FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup in Colombia. On Tuesday, Canada trounced Fiji 9-0, and now have a record of one win and one tie in this prestigious international soccer event.

Annabelle Chukwu of Ottawa, Ontario led Canada in scoring with a hat trick as she scored goals in the 24th, 34th, and 41st minutes. Two other Canadians had a multi-goal game as Kayla Briggs of Toronto, Ontario scored twice and Olivia Smith of North York, Ontario scored twice. Smith scored the game-winning goal in the seventh minute, and again in the 28th minute. Briggs scored in the 32nd and 35th minutes. Meanwhile, Ella Ottey of Toronto and Ella McBride of Peterborough, Ontario each scored one goal. Ottey scored in the 54th minute and McBride in the 67th minute.

This was Canada’s second game of the tournament. They played their first game against France on Saturday and tied at three goals apiece. Canada will next play Brazil on Friday.

Once before Canada has earned a medal at the FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup. That happened to be the first year the tournament took place in 2003. At Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada won the silver medal. They lost to the United States 1-0 in the final.
