Team Canada is in the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In round of 32 action on Sunday afternoon from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, Canada defeated South Africa by a score of 1-0.
The lone Canadian goal scorer was Stephen Eustaquio of Leamington, Ontario. The 29-year-old midfielder who plays for the Los Angeles Football Club of Major League Soccer scored in the second minute of extra time in the second half. You could make the argument that Eustaquio’s goal was one of the biggest goals in Canadian soccer history.
Eustaquio is one of two players to score the game-winning goal in the extra-time of second half in the group of 32. Gabriel Martinelli scored in the 95th minute on Monday in Houston in a 2-1 Brazil win over Japan.
This was Eustaquio’s fifth career goal for Canada. He previously scored in a 4-1 Canada win over Martinique at the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup in Kansas City, in a 4-1 Canada win over Haiti at the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup in Kansas City, in a 2-0 Canada win over Costa Rica at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in Dallas, and in a 2-1 Canada win over Jamaica at the 2023-24 CONCACAF Nations League in Kingston, Jamaica.
With the win, Canada will now play the winner of the Netherlands and Morocco. This round of 32 matchup will take place on Monday night in Monterrey, Mexico. Remember, Morocco beat Canada in the last World Cup by score of 2-1 in Qatar.
