Team Canada has qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris in women’s basketball. On Sunday, Canada qualified by finishing in third place in an Olympic women’s basketball qualifying tournament in Sopron, Hungary.
In the four-team tournament, Canada had a record of one win and two losses. After beating Hungary 67-55 on Thursday, they lost 60-55 to Spain on Friday, and 86-82 to Japan on Sunday. The win over Hungary was good enough for third place. Like Canada, Hungary also had a record of one win and two losses. However, Canada got the advantage because they beat Hungary.
The Hungarians had a glorious chance to qualify for the Olympic Games on Sunday. They had a 22-point lead over Spain, but lost 73-72 in an amazing comeback by the Spaniards. A win by Hungary over Spain would have eliminated Canada from Olympic competition. Spain and Japan also qualified by having records of two wins and one loss in the group.
Team Canada qualified despite not having Kia Nurse in the lineup. Nurse of Hamilton, Ontario, was out with an injury she suffered in practice. The other eight teams that have qualified for the Olympic Games are France, the United States, China, Puerto Rico, Belgium, Nigeria, Australia, Germany, and Serbia.
