Team Canada finished third on Saturday in the Canada Cup for women’s water polo. In their final two games, Canada lost 10-6 to the United States on Friday and then 16-8 to Russia on Saturday. However, due to the fact Canada beat the Netherlands 11-10 and China 12-10 earlier in the tournament, the Canadians were good enough to finish third with a record of two wins and two losses.

Canada has already qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in women’s water polo, and this tournament was considered a tuneup. Canada is one of five teams who have qualified to date and are joined by Australia, the United States, Japan and Spain.

There are five more countries that will be participating at the Olympic Games in women’s water polo. One team will be determined from the European Championships in Budapest, Hungary in January, another from the Asian qualification tournament in Almaty, Kazakhstan in February, and three more teams from a world qualification tournament in Italy in March.

Women’s water polo made its Olympic debut at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Canada finished in fifth place. Since then Team Canada finished seventh at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. They did not qualify at the last three Olympic Games.
