Team Canada improved to a record of three wins and one loss in 2024 Women’s Volleyball Nations League action on Saturday from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After beating the Dominican Republic 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 in straight sets on Thursday, and stunning China 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 25-22 in four sets on Friday, Canada beat Thailand 25-21, 25-13, 20-25, 25-17 on Saturday.
Three Canadian players reached double digits in scoring. Outside hitter Kiera Van Ryk of New Westminster, British Columbia led Canada with 22 points, middle blocker Emily Maglio of Cranbrook, British Columbia had 14 points, and captain and outside hitter Alexa Gray of Lethbridge, Alberta had 13 points. Van Ryk had 21 attack points and one block point, Maglio had 10 attack points and four block points, and Gray had 11 attack points, one ace, and one block point. Van Ryk led Canada with 21 attack points, Maglio led Canada with four block points, and outside hitter Quincy Johnson of Vancouver, British Columbia led Canada with three aces.
In the overall standings, Canada is in a third place tie with China, Italy and Japan. The only undefeated teams at four wins and zero losses are Poland and Brazil. Canada next travels to Arlington, Texas for further Women’s Volleyball Nations League action. There they play the United States on May 28, Germany on May 30, Serbia on May 31, and South Korea on June 2.
