Canada advances to semifinals in women’s field hockey at 2019 Pan American Games

Team Canada is in the semifinals in women’s field hockey at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.On Sunday, Canada defeated Mexico 9-0 in the quarterfinals. The winner of the women’s field hockey tournament will participate at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

In Canada’s nine goal win over Mexico on Sunday, two Canadian players scored twice. They were Karli Johansen of Vancouver, British Columbia and Natalie Sourisseau of Kelowna, British Columbia. The five Canadians who scored one goal were Rachel Donohoe and Hannah Haughn of Vancouver, British Columbia, Sara McManus of Richmond, British Columbia, Amanda Woodcroft of Waterloo, Ontario and Brienne Stairs of Kitchener, Ontario. Kaitlyn Williams of White Rock, British Columbia did not have to make a save in picking up the shutout.

In other quarterfinal action, Argentina thumped Peru 21-0, Chile beat Uruguay 5-0 and the United States beat Cuba 9-0. Canada will play Argentina in one semifinal on Tuesday with Chile playing the United States in the other semifinal.

Canada will have their hands full against a very talented Argentinian side in the semifinals. Canada has already lost to Argentina in the tournament to date as they lost 3-0 on July 31. In Canada’s loss (the only loss by the men or women in field hockey at the Pan American Games so far), Canada had three shots, but could not score. If they capitalize on opportunities, Canada has a chance.
