Canadian Olympic gold medalist Brad Gushue of St. John’s, Newfoundland has won his first two games at the 2022 World Men’s Curling Championship at Las Vegas, Nevada. On Saturday, the Canadian team comprised of Gushue, third Mark Nichols, second Brett Gallant, and lead Geoff Walker, defeated the Czech Republic 6-4 in the first session and then Norway 8-7 in the second session.
In the Canadian win over the Czech Republic, Team Canada jumped out to a 5-1 lead before the Czech Republic team skipped by Lukas Klima scored three unanswered points to make things interesting. Then in Canada’s win over Norway, the Canadians scored two points in the 10th end for the 8-7 win. In the final end, Canada did a great job in guarding one Canadian stone that would have tied the game, and then with his final shot, Gushue made an impressive raise to lie two points. At that time, there were so many guards, the Norwegian squad could not get to the four-foot with much clarity, and simply did not have a shot.
Gushue won the gold medal for Canada at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin. Speaking of Olympic gold medalists, the 2022 Olympic gold medalist from Beijing, Niklas Edin of Sweden, lost his first game at the 2022 World Men’s Curling Championship on Sunday morning to Switzerland 8-7.
