Bianca Andreescu reaches fourth round of 2019 US Open

Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario is in the fourth round in women’s singles of the 2019 U.S. Open. On Saturday, Andreescu won her third round match by beating Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, 6-4, 6-4.

In Saturday’s win, Andreescu had 27 winners compared to only 13 for Wozniacki and broke Wozniacki two more times as she had six breaks of serve compared to Wozniacki’s four. Wozniacki was previously ranked first in the world and won the 2018 Australian Open.

It was the second time this season that Andreescu knocked off Wozniacki in 2019. Back in January, Andreescu beat Wozniacki 6-4, 6-4 in the second round of the Auckland Open. While playing in New Zealand leading up to the first major of the season, Andreescu reached the finals where she lost in the final to Julia Goerges of Germany, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Interestingly Andreescu will not have to worry about Goerges at the U.S. Open. On Monday, Goerges had seven key double faults in a fourth round loss to Donna Vekic of Croatia by a score of 6-7, 7-5, 6-3.

Andreescu’s fourth round opponent on Monday is Taylor Townsend of the United States. Townsend has already shocked fourth ranked Simona Halep of Romania in the second round of the 2019 U.S. Open 2-6, 6-3, 7-6. Townsend has been known throughout the tournament as coming to the net on a regular basis.
