Team Canada has won their first medal at the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea. On Saturday, Anthony Shelly of Whistler, British Columbia won the silver medal in the men’s snowboardcross.
Shelly placed behind gold medalist Jonas Chollet of France and ahead of bronze medalist Zion Bethonico of Brazil. Bethonico made Brazilian sports history by becoming the first Brazilian athlete to ever win a medal at the Winter Youth Olympic Games. Brazil has never won a medal in the history of the Olympic Winter Games, but has won 150 medals (37 gold medals, 42 silver medals and 71 bronze medals) in the history of the Olympic Summer Games.
In the men’s snowboard cross, Shelly won his races in group six, group eight, group nine, and group 10. He finished in second place in group seven, only behind Bethonico in group seven. Shelly then advanced to the big final, by finishing in second place, only behind Boden Gerry of the United States in the semifinals.
Team Canada is currently tied for 12th place in the overall medal standings with one silver medal. France is currently in the lead with four medals after day one. They have won gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal.
