Ana Godinez Gonzalez of Burnaby, British Columbia won the gold medal at the Polyak Imre, Varga Janos & Kozma Istvan Memorial in Budapest, Hungary on Friday according to The Bridge. Godinez Gonzalez finished first in the women’s 62 kilogram division. It was one of two medals won by Canada in the event. Karla Godinez Gonzalez of Coquitlam, British Columbia (Ana’s sister) won the bronze medal in the women’s 55 kilogram division.
In the women’s 62 kilogram division, Ana Godinez Gonzalez defeated Lais Nunas of Brazil in the qualification 5-0, Grace Bullen of Norway 7-6 in the first round, Adaugo Nwachukwu of the United States 6-2 in the quarterfinals, Veranika Ivanova of Belarus 13-7 in the semifinals, and Mansi Mansi of India in the gold medal match as Mansi withdrew from her match due to injury. Savita Savita of India and Bullen each won the bronze medal.
In the women’s 55 kilogram division, Karla Godinez Gonzalez defeated Areana Louise Villaescusa of the United States 2-1 in the quarterfinals before losing to Nataliia Klivchutska 2-1 in the semifinals. Karla Godinez Gonzalez then won her bronze medal by beating Gultakin Shirinova of Azerbaijan 5-0 in the bronze medal match. Klivchutska won the gold medal, Hansika Lamba of India won the silver medal, and Anastasia Blayvas of Germany won the other bronze medal.
This was the third straight year that Ana Godinez Gonzalez won a medal in Budapest, Hungary. She won the gold medal in 2024 and the bronze medal in 2025. Ana Godinez Gonzalez also won the silver medal at the 2021 Poland Open and a bronze medal at the 2023 Kaba Uulu Kozhomkul & Raatbek Sanatbaev Ranking Series event in Kyrgyzstan.
Karla Godinez Gonzalez previously won a silver medal at the 2022 Zouhaier Sghaier in Tunisia, silver medal at the 2023 Kaba Uulu Kozhomkul & Raatbek Sanatbaev Ranking Series event in Kyrgyzstan, silver medal at the 2023 Polyak Imre Memorial in Budapest, Hungary, silver medal at the 2025 Polyak Imre & Varga Janos Memorial in Budapest in 2025, and a silver medal at the 2026 Zagreb Open.
