Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Alysha Newman of London, Ontario won the silver medal in women’s pole vault at a Diamond League event in Zurich, Switzerland on Wednesday. For Newman it was her seventh career Diamond League medal and third of the season.
Newman posted a vault of 4.82 metres. Nina Kennedy of Australia won the gold medal with a vault of 4.87 metres. Katie Moon of the United States won the bronze medal with a vault of 4.82 metres. Newman reached the podium by .05 metres. Angelica Moser of Switzerland finished in fourth place with a vault of 4.77 metres. The reason why Newman placed in front of Moon is because she had two missed attempts by the time she reached 4.82 metres, while Moon had four missed attempts.
This was the final event on the Diamond League schedule before the Diamond League Final in Brussels, Belgium on September 13 and 14. Newman is in a tie for second place in the Diamond League standings with Moser. Moser and Newman both have 25 points. Kennedy has 39 points.
Newman won the bronze medal for Canada in women’s pole vault at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The third place finish will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
