Victoria Mboko of Burlington, Ontario has won her second WTA tournament of 2025 and of her career. On Sunday, she defeated Cristina Bucsa of Spain 7-5, 6-7, 6-2 to win the 2025 Hong Kong Open.
A major reason why Mboko came through with the win came down to her serve. Mboko had nine aces, compared to only two aces for Bucsa.
Mboko also broke Bucsa six times in 13 opportunities. Mboko won 132 points in the match compared to 121 for Bucsa.
During the 2025 Hong Kong Open, Mboko also beat Talia Gibson of Australia 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 in the first round, Alexandra Eala of the Philippines 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round, Anna Kalinskaya of Russia 6-1, 3-1 in the quarterfinals, and fellow Canadian and the second seed, Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal, Quebec, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals. It should be noted that Mboko was the third seed in Hong Kong, and this was the first time ever that Mboko has ever played Fernandez. The Montreal native is famous for reaching the United States Open final in 2021.
Mboko’s first WTA win came at the 2025 Canadian Open in Montreal. The Canadian Open is a 1000 series event, while the Hong Kong Open is 250 event. In Montreal this past August, Mboko beat four-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka of Japan in the final, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
