The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds have won the 2025 USport title in women’s rugby. On Sunday at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, the Thunderbirds used home field to their advantage as they defeated the University of Victoria Vikes 15-13 in the championship final.
The Thunderbirds were down 13-10 heading into the final minute when Adia Pye of Victoria, British Columbia had the game winning try. Olivia Sarabura of Guelph, Ontario also had a try in the 20th minute for the Thuderbirds.
The championship game had poor conversions. Of the four attempted tries, there was only one successful conversion. That was kicked by UBC’s Brooke Roodham of Langley, British Columbia.
It was also a notable tournament by Charity Williams of Toronto, Ontario. Williams, who won the silver medal for Canada in women’s rugby sevens at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, was the tournament’s most valuable player.
There were five tournament All-Stars on UBC. They were prop Kiki Idowu of Toronto, Ontario, Williams (who plays outside centre), Roodham (who plays fly half), Teya Ashworth of Vancouver (who plays lock), and left wing Tia Jordo of Kelowna, British Columbia (who plays left wing).
This was the Thunderbirds’s second Canadian University Women’s Rugby Championship. They won their first title a year ago in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island by beating the Vikes 8-3 in the final.
