
The third round of the 2025 United States Open in Flushing Meadows, New York gets underway on Friday. There are three Canadians left. Let’s take a look at who they are.
Felix Auger-Aliassime
The 2021 United States Open semifinalist from Montreal, Quebec is coming off an impressive straight set win over Roman Safiullin of Russia in the second round on Thursday by a score of 6-1, 7-6, 7-6. Auger-Aliassime had the service advantage as he had 14 aces and five double faults, compared to Safiullin, who had four aces and nine double faults. Next up for Auger-Aliassime, the 25th seed, is the third seed Alexander Zverev of Germany. Auger-Aliassime is 2-6 all-time versus Zverev. Auger-Aliassime’s wins came in the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2021 (6-4, 7-6, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4) and the round robin of the 2022 ATP Cup in Australia (6-4, 4-6, 6-3). Zverev has reached three grand slam finals–the United States Open in 2020, the French Open in 2024, and the Australian Open in 2025.
Leylah Annie Fernandez
The 2021 United States Open finalist from Montreal beat Elsa Jacquemot of France 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in round two. Fernandez broke Jacquemot four times. Next up for Fernandez, the 31st seed, is world number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. Sabalenka won the Australian Open in 2023 and 2024, and the United States Open in 2024. Fernandez won their only prior matchup, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 in the semifinals of the 2021 United States Open.
Denis Shapovalov
Shapovalov, the 27th seed, and 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist, beat Valentin Royer of France in round two, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3. Shapovalov had 29 aces compared to seven for Royer. Next up for Shapovalov is the world number one Jannik Sinner of Italy. Sinner won the Australian Open and United States Open in 2024, and the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2025. Shapovalov won their only prior meeting, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the first round of the 2021 Australian Open.
