Golf’s first major for the 2026 season begins on Thursday from Augusta, Georgia with three Canadians in the field. They are Mike Weir of Sarnia, Ontario, Nick Taylor of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Corey Conners of Listowel, Ontario.
Weir qualified for the Masters by being a past champion. In 2003, Weir was the first and only Canadian man ever to win a major championship in golf. He posted a score of -7 at the Masters and beat Len Mattiace of Mineola, New York in a playoff. Interestingly, Weir won the playoff with a bogey as Mattiace had all sorts of problems on the 10th hole. Weir also became the first left-handed golfer to win the Masters.
Conners qualified because he was in the top 12 of the 2025 Masters Tournament. He finished tied for eighth place last year at -5. Conners was six strokes back of the champion, Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland.
Taylor qualified for the Masters because he qualified for the 2025 Tour Championship in Atlanta, Georgia. Taylor finished in 19th place with a score of -8 and was 10 strokes back of champion Tommy Fleetwood of England.
Conners is currently the top Canadian in the Official World Golf Rankings. He is 44th in the world with 2.2478 average points. Taylor is 67th in the world and Weir is 4935th in the world.
