The world records in Victoria, British Columbia this week are not stopping for Canadian Olympic gold medalist Summer McIntosh of Toronto, Ontario. For the third time this week at the 2025 Canadian Swimming Trials, McIntosh set a world record. After breaking a world record in the women’s 400 metre freestyle and women’s 200 metre individual medley, it was time to break her own world record in the women’s 400 metre individual medley on Wednesday.
McIntosh posted a time of 4:23.65. Her previous world record was 4:24.38, which was set at the 2024 Canadian Swimming Trials in Toronto, Ontario. Interestingly, McIntosh also holds the world record in the women’s short course in the women’s 400 metre individual medley. She had a time of 4:15.48 at the 2024 World Short Course Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
McIntosh is set to do something spectacular at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. If she stays healthy, McIntosh should easily beat the four medals (three gold and one silver) she won at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
On Tuesday, McIntosh continued her excellence in the 200 metre butterfly (one of the three events she won the Olympic gold in Paris, the others were the women’s 200 metre and 400 metre individual medley). She set a national record time of 2:02.26. That was 0.77 seconds faster than the previous Canadian record time of 2:03.03 set at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The world record time in the women’s 200 metre butterfly belongs to Liu Zige of China, who swam to a time of 2:01.81 at the 2009 Chinese National Games in Jinan, China.
