Summer McIntosh and Ilya Kharun win bronze at 2025 World Aquatics Championships

Canadian Olympic gold medalist Summer McIntosh of Toronto, Ontario, and Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Ilya Kharun of Montreal, Quebec each won bronze medals on Saturday at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. McIntosh won her bronze medal in the women’s 800 metre freestyle, and Kharun won bronze in the men’s 100 metre butterfly.

Canada now has eight medals at the World Aquatics Championships. They have three gold medals. one silver medal, and four bronze medals.

In the men’s 100 metre butterfly, Kharun had a third place time of 50.07 seconds. Maxime Grousset of France set a European record in winning the gold medal with a time of 49.62 seconds. Noe Ponti of Switzerland won the silver medal with a time of 49.83 seconds. Kharun reached the podium by two one-hundredths of a second over fellow Canadian Josh Liendo of Toronto. Liendo had a fourth place time of 50.09 seconds. This was Kharun’s first career medal at the World Aquatics Championships. He won bronze in the men’s 100 metre butterfly and the men’s 200 metre butterfly at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

McIntosh had a third place time in the women’s 800 metres of 8:07.29. Katie Ledecky of the United States won the gold medal with a time of 8:05.62. Lani Pallister of Australia won the silver medal with a time of 8:05.98. McIntosh reached the podium by 5.52 seconds over Simona Quadarella of Italy, who had a fourth place time of 8:12.81.

McIntosh was leading the women’s 800 metres at the 700 metre mark, but did not have a strong finish and dropped two spots. Her gold medals at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris came in the women’s 200 metre butterfly, women’s 200 metre individual medley and the women’s 4900 metre individual medley. The bronze medals for Kharun and McIntosh will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
