Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner of Edmonton, Alberta recorded his eighth career National Hockey League shutout on Tuesday. He accomplished the feat in a 2-0 Oilers win over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden in New York. It is an historic season for the Rangers as they are celebrating their centennial anniversary.
Skinner made 30 saves overall. He had six saves in the first period, 11 saves in the second period and 13 saves in the third period. Artemi Panarin led the Rangers with five shots on goal.
It has been a bizarre season for Skinner to date. He has played in two games. In the first game, the Oilers outplayed the Calgary Flames, but Skinner had a poor performance during regulation, and Edmonton lost 4-3 in a shootout. In the second game, the Oilers were outplayed by the Rangers, but Skinner was by far the Oilers’s best player on this night and Edmonton won by two. Skinner did however get some lucky breaks as Rangers’s players hit multiple posts.
Offensively, Adam Henrique of Brantford, Ontario, and Trent Frederic scored for the Oilers. Henrique scored an all-Canadian goal as Connor McDavid of Richmond Hill, Ontario and Andrew Mangiapane of Toronto, Ontario had the assists.
For the season, Skinner now has a goals against average of 1.44 and a save percentage of .942. The Oilers improved to a record of two wins and one loss.
